기획 소개

《1839.08.19. — 사진 발명 이야기》는 초기 사진술이 어떻게 발명되고 발전해왔는지를 실제 오리지널 사진과 자료를 통해 한 자리에서 보여주기 위해 기획한 전시이다.

2022년 《다게르의 밤: 두 번째 사진술에 대하여》를 통해 다게레오타입을 소개한 뒤, 관람객들이 틴타입, 암브로타입과 같은 다른 초기 사진술에 대해 질문하기 시작했다. 이 질문을 계기로 다게레오타입 하나에 머물지 않고, 19세기 사진술의 여러 프로세스를 서로 비교하며 사진의 발전 과정을 보다 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 전시를 구성하고자 했다.

기획자가 수집한 약 100여 점의 자료 가운데 다게레오타입, 틴타입, 암브로타입, 유리건판 등 19세기부터 20세기 초의 사진을 선별해 전시했으며, 각 사진술의 차이와 장단점, 그리고 기술의 변화가 사진 이미지에 어떤 영향을 주었는지를 직접 비교해 볼 수 있도록 구성하였다. 또한 다게르의 「탕플대로」 복제품과 다게레오타입 제작 시연을 통해 사진 발명의 역사와 실제 제작 과정을 함께 경험할 수 있도록 했다.

Curatorial Introduction

1839.08.19. — The Story of the Invention of Photography was conceived to present the invention and development of early photography through original photographs and historical materials.

Following Daguerre’s Night: About the Second Photography in 2022, visitors began asking about other early photographic processes such as tintypes and ambrotypes. These questions led to an expanded exhibition that moved beyond the daguerreotype alone, allowing viewers to compare different nineteenth-century photographic processes and understand more clearly how photographic technology developed over time.
Selected from a collection of approximately one hundred objects, the exhibition included daguerreotypes, tintypes, ambrotypes, glass plates, and other photographs from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By placing these processes side by side, the exhibition invited viewers to compare their distinct characteristics, advantages, limitations, and the ways in which changes in technology shaped the photographic image. A reproduction of Daguerre’s Boulevard du Temple and live demonstrations of the daguerreotype process further connected the history of photography with the physical act of making photographs.
