Curatorial Introduction

Chronicles Written with Light was conceived to examine the history of nineteenth-century photography not simply as a chronology of technological development, but as a material history of how photographic images came into existence.

Nineteenth-century photography developed through a range of coexisting processes using silver-plated copper, glass, iron, and paper as image supports. The exhibition brought together approximately one hundred original photographs and historical objects, including daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, salt prints, albumen prints, glass-plate photographs, nineteenth-century wooden cameras, and brass lenses.

The exhibition asked viewers to consider not only what a photograph depicts, but also what carries the image and through which materials and processes it was made. The reflective surface of silver, the transparency of glass, the physical presence of iron, and the fibers and coatings of paper each produced different kinds of photographic images. These changes in material and process also transformed the reproduction and circulation of photographs, portrait culture, and visual experience.

At a time when photographic images are routinely encountered as digital reproductions, the exhibition sought to bring viewers face to face with original nineteenth-century photographs as physical objects—objects formed through the interaction of light, chemistry, material, and time.
